Digital Video Recorder (DVR)
A DVR is an electronic device that records CCTV footage in a digital format to a disk drive, solid-state drive (SSD), or other mass storage device (local or networked). It is a common type of recording device used to back up CCTV footage. It usually works with COAX cameras which transmit their video data straight to the DVR through a Coaxial cable. Then, the DVR encodes and writes the files to the hard drive of the DVR, which makes footage retrieval at a later date easier. Most modern DVRs are capable of using multiple types of video signals and can accept some IP cameras on the same network.
2. Network Video Recorder (NVR)
NVRs and DVRs are both responsible for recording CCTV footage, the major difference between them is how they process their video data. An NVR processes and encodes video data at the camera and then streams it to the NVR recorder which is used for storage and remote viewing, while a DVR processes data at the recorder. NVRs only work with IP cameras and have the most advanced analytic features.
3. Ethernet
Ethernet cable is a medium of transmitting network data among connected devices on a network. They come in various types such as cat6, cat5e, cat 5, cat 4 which are used in creating wired networks. Ethernet cables and ports are used when connecting an IP camera to a POE (Power over Ethernet) switch or recorder.
4. Pan, Tilt, and ZOOM (PTZ)
PTZ refers to the movement options of a camera. It is capable of zoom control and remote directional control, and it allows cameras to attain various positioning and zoom lengths. In addition, they often have features like the auto-tracking movement.
5. Infrared (IR)
